What is Alpha?
Alpha is a series of sessions exploring life and the Christian faith. The talks are designed to engage and inspire conversation, and foster personal growth and fellowship, as you unpack the basics of Christianity, explore issues related to faith, and address questions such as: “Who is Jesus?” and “How can we have faith?” and “Does God heal?”
Why should you consider trying Alpha?
Since we have started Alpha at our parish, almost 400 people have participated. Alpha is an opportunity to increase our personal relationship with God, and with each other as members of the Body of Christ. Alpha provides ways to engage with those right in your church as well as those in surrounding communities. You have the opportunity to engage and share your thoughts and ask any questions you would like. But know that participation is not required, you may sit, absorb, and pray silently.
How does Alpha work?
Alpha is a series of short films that are based on one topic each week. The evening begins with a meal followed by a short film of the week’s topic. After the film, the members of Alpha break into small groups (the same group each week) to discuss a series of questions based on the film and beyond.
The reason I signed up for the latest Alpha course was that I have been looking for ways to renew and grow my faith in Jesus Christ. Up to now I have been trying to do this on my own by regularly attending mass and reading my bible, but wanted to understand and know more. So I talked about attending the course with my wife and we decided to take the course together.
At the first class we found our group of six people and a moderator seated at a round table with several other groups in the room. We shared supper together and then watched a 25 minute instructional video. Following the video all the attendees returned to their table for desert and a moderator lead discussion. The discussions were voluntary and casual and resulted in people exploring and sharing their life experiences with the group. I think each person in the group shared one or more experiences that seemed to provide them with comfort and healing. I found that I came to look forward to each weekly meeting, the instructional videos, and the fellowship that our group shared with each other.
If you are looking for something more meaningful in life, give Alpha a try; we are so glad that we did.
